Engineering Buyer / Assistant Buyer

To negotiate and place purchase orders as per requirement, ensuring schedule reporting and delivery promises are maintained by suppliers. Job Title dependant of experience.

Responsible to:  Purchase Manager   

Main Duties and Accountabilities  

  • Negotiate and place purchase orders of all BOM components, consumables and other goods in line with production and business requirements and current procurement policies and procedures. 
  • To expedite orders in accordance with purchase order requirements 
  • Work with suppliers to communicate and improve deliveries, update systems accordingly 
  • Review and develop existing suppliers, negotiate contracts with new suppliers 
  • Management of supplier performance including development plans and reviews in line with company quality system, reviewing current KPI’s for suppliers and creation of new ones  
  • Dealing with supplier enquiries and acknowledgements   
  • Searching for new suppliers to increase supply base, improve costs and reduce spend and delivery lead times 
  • Monitor Supplier Performance and provide feedback  
  • Updating sales cost sheets with current supplier pricing 
  • Occasional process all goods received and C of C’s 
  • Allocating from stock and maintaining stock levels 
  • Maintenance of purchasing systems to keep records accurately  
  • Providing general administrative support to the Purchasing function 

 Person Specification 

  • Demonstrable background of Purchasing in a manufacturing environment, ideally of Hydraulic components or Engineered parts 
  • Strong negotiation and excellent communication skills  
  • Understanding of inventory management (parts lists) processes and practice 
  • Good level of IT literacy (Excel and ERP/MRP ) 
  • Good personal organisational and motivational ability, self-managed 
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to interface at all levels with internal contacts as well as customers and suppliers  
  • Flexible with regard to tasks and working hours  
  • Commercially astute, able to negotiate with suppliers to get best value  
  • Proactive and focused 
  • Understanding of Engineering drawings (will be an advantage) 
  • Full UK driving Licence
